Yes, using oil-free products is the first rule for oily skin. But there is more to this skin type than what is talked about. Oily skin can be challenging especially when you’re getting ready for a party and your kohl’d look smears all over.
The good news is that there are a few hacks you can add to your skincare arsenal to effortlessly deal with oily skin.
HACK #1: USE SKINCARE FORMULATED FOR OILY SKIN
Skincare is unique to different skin types, skin concerns, and lifestyle. For oily skin, water or gel-based products are recommended as they are easily absorbed and won’t clog large pores that are common with this skin type. Look for the word ‘matte-finish’ and ‘lightweight’ in labels, as oily skin is already loaded, and one needs to use products that control the excess and keep your skin moisturized at the same time.
HACK #2: RELIGIOUSLY CLEANSE, TREAT, MOISTURIZE & PROTECT
There is no way around it. Oily skin types have large pores that trap dirt and oil easily from touch, air, and surrounding elements. Therefore, it becomes mandatory to keep the skin clean, at least twice a day. These types are also highly photosensitive and need to use a sunblock of 30 SPF or above before going out. Oily skin types cannot use moisturizer is a myth as no matter what the skin type, it is just important. A ceramide or hyaluronic moisturizer is known to control sebum production and retain the skin’s moisture balance effectively. A pea-sized dose of Vitamin A serum or AHA-BHA Gel can be used (as per prescription) to give your skin anti-oxidant ammunition and regenerative healing.
HACK #3: CLEANSE WITH OIL-FREE & FOAMING CLEANSER
Cleansing twice daily is advised for oily skin types. You can’t change the size of your pores, but you can change how they look by keeping them clean and not get them clogged. Word’s out that our newly launched AHA-BHA foaming cleanser is really gentle on your skin and very effective. AHA or Alpha Hydroxy Acid slugs off surface dirt while BHA or Beta Hydroxy Acid loses dirt deep within the pores. Bet you didn’t see that coming 😉
HACK #4: TRY A GEL-BASED TREATMENT PRODUCT
Serums with active ingredients can be used by oily skin types to help with any skin concern they wish to address. Gel-based serums are light and therefore are the safest option as it would absorb easily and won’t clog pores. The much raved about, our AHA-BHA Gel has been testified to be a staple treatment in combination with Niacinamide to treat and control acne breakouts in as early as 21 days!
HACK #5: USE AN OIL-FREE MOISTURIZER
All skin types need adequate moisturization to keep pH levels in check. There are specially formulated clinical solutions like our Squalene Moisturizer, which introduces and locks in moisture effectively for hours in a day. Also, compounds of Zinc present in the product controls oil and leaves you with a shine-free profile. What more can we ask for from a moisturizer?
HACK #6: APPLY AN SPF 30 OR ABOVE SUNBLOCK
Again, SPF is not banned for oily skin types. No matter what your skin type, sun protection is an absolute must-have skincare product. In the case of oily skin, gel-based sunblocks can do no harm. The Ultra Matte sunscreen by The Derma Co. gives you 60 PA*** SPF protection is ultra-light on your skin and oil-free.
HACK #7: EXFOLIATE (GENTLY) TWICE A WEEK
A double-cleanse like The Derma Co.’s AHA-BHA Foaming Cleanser shrugs off the dirt from pores like nobody’s business but in case you want to be extra sure, you can try exfoliating twice a week. You can also use two drops of lactic acid, a gentle exfoliator, along with the AHA-BHA Foaming Cleanser, and you’re good as gold.
HACK #8: READ LABELS FOR COMEDOGENIC INGREDIENTS
The biggest offenders are parabens, silicones, sulfates, and mineral oil. Make sure you are informed about comedogenic ingredients and read the label of every product before making a buy.
HACK #9: USE ORGANIC OR MINERAL-BASED MAKEUP
Mineral cosmetics are oil-free and won’t clog pores. So, if you wish to put on some concealer or setting powder, make sure they are mineral-based.
HACK #10: CARRY BLOTTING SHEETS
Blotting sheets are so useful, especially in the middle of the day, when you find your skin glowing with all the oil on your face. Keep them handy for a matte look without having to wash your face and repeat the routine several times a day.
You’ve lived with the odds. Now it’s time to go about your day clear and confident. Follow these derma-approved hacks and stay flawless!
